Aida Branković Ethical AI & Data Analysis (AIDA) Researcher, Innovator, Engineer, Ethical&Safe AI solution architect
CSIRO, The University of Queensland
Dr Aida Branković is a researcher and engineer at the cutting edge of biomedical innovation, leading work at the intersection of AI and healthcare. She is developing innovative, safe, ethical, and trustworthy AI-enabled clinical decision support tools and medical devices that improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
Academic Background and Research Journey
Aida has BSc and MSc engineering degrees in Systems control and Electronics, and PhD in Information technology (Nonlinear Model Identification and Machine Learning).
She currently works at CSIRO as a Senior Research Scientist. As a Responsible Innovation Future Science Platform project lead, she led creation of the first actionable guidelines for mitigating ethical risks in the development of AI-powered tools for ICU settings and the checklist for XAI evaluation, registered with the EQUATOR Network https://shorturl.at/EZOsy. As ML activity lead at Health Intelligence team she led development of solutions which attracted industry partners. Previously, Aida worked at the University of Queensland (UQ) as a researcher on novel brain scanning technology currently undergoing validation in the US for the FDA clearance. Before joining the UQ, Aida was a postdoc at the Politecnico di Milano, focused on predictive modeling and fault detection in oil extraction activities. Her PhD thesis focused on development of novel model optimisation algorithms for large data applicable to nonlinear model identification and ML frameworks.
Research interest, Awards and Media Features
Her research interests span nonlinear model identification, model optimisation, AI decision making, ethical AI, explainable AI, with a particular interest in the robustness and reliability of machine learning models used in medicine.
Aida is Editorial Board Member of Nature Scientific Report and serves theEuropean Commission as an expert evaluator and reviewer. She is also program member of The Pacific Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (PRICAI).
She is the chief inventor of two U.S. patents licensed to the industry partner. Her work has been recognised through number of prestigious awards and fellowships listed below from most recent to earliest:
